The spring thaw was a little late this year, but now it has made its mark. The snow has melted remarkably quick, leaving rather dry earth in its wake.

Due to the dry conditions, Lacombe County has issued a fire advisory. While the advisory is in place, new fire permits will not be issued.

This is to minimize the threat of grass and wild fires in the County, until conditions are more favourable.

Lacombe County will be allowing current valid fire permits to be used at this time, but will not be issuing new ones.

Campfires and burning barrels are allowed in Lacombe County, however should conditions continue to worsen, those to may be restricted.

“We ask that all conditions of valid fire permits are strictly adhered to,” said Drayton Bussiere, Lacombe County fire chief.

Red Deer County has also suspended fire permits for the county.

A press release from the county ensures there is no fire ban at the moment, but new burn permits will not be issued.

“Burn permits are a requirement for burning prohibited debris within the County,” a Red Deer County press release states.

Moving forward, Red Deer County and Lacombe County will monitor the weather conditions. Both counties will be making updates on their website and social media sites.

Before leaving a fire unattended, residents are reminded to make sure the fire is completely extinguished to stop the potential spread of fire.
