A Rocky Mountain House man has been charged with drug trafficking after a lengthy investigation.

According to a press release from RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Laurel Scott, “On May 31, 2018, following a month long investigation, RCMP in Rocky Mountain House executed a search warrant at a residence. The warrant was obtained under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. As a result of this warrant, cocaine was seized and two persons were arrested and charged.

“During this lengthy investigation, the Rocky Mountain House RCMP was assisted by Edmonton ALERT and both Sylvan Lake and Red Deer General Investigation Sections.

“23-year-old Mathew McKinnon is charged with three counts of Trafficking a Controlled Substance - cocaine, contrary to Section 5(1) of the CDSA.

“The second person, a youth who cannot be named as per the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with two counts of Trafficking a Controlled Substance - cocaine, contrary to Section 5(1) of the CDSA.

“McKinnon has been remanded in custody and will appear in court next on August 8, 2018 in Rocky Mountain House. The youth has been released, and will appear in court in July.

“In an effort to achieve ongoing and further intelligence impacting other investigations, the RCMP delayed in reporting this outcome” says Sgt. Jay Penner of Rocky Mountain House. “Operations like this often involve collaboration between partner agencies and neighbouring communities. Interrupting criminal activity in one detachment area can impact other areas and ultimately is a win for several communities.”
