Meeting rooms named Archambault, Faucher, Heenan, Loiselle and Rossé

Five meeting rooms in the town’s new Municipal Government Building (MGB) will be named after founding families of Sylvan Lake.

But one councillor thought they should be named after former mayors or long serving elected officials.

Councillors were presented with four sets of names received from Sylvan Lake & District Archives at their meeting Monday night.

The names included:

• Former dance halls: Alexander (Pavilion), Penley’s Varsity Hall, Prom Hall, Trianon, Ranch House.

• Well known educators: Blakely, Blick, Cody, Kinna and Woima.

• Founding families in the area: Archambault, Faucher, Heenan, Loiselle and Rossé, or

• Main street business owners: Alexander, Cobb, Cole, Lane, May & Turner, Wilkinson.

“I think the most thoughtful would be founding families,” said Councillor Sean McIntyre.

“I support founding families,” said Councillor Rick Grimson. “From a historic significance, they’re entirely appropriate.”

Councillors Graham Parsons and Dale Plante also preferred founding families.

“I’m not favourable about former educators,” said Councillor Laverne Asselstine, noting some are already recognized on schools. “Main street business owners are food for thought. Still I think people elected are equally as eligible as founding families or business owners.”

“I like former dance halls,” said Mayor Susan Samson. “I like dance halls because they’re such a unique part of our history with Sylvan Lake music.”

Councillor Ken MacVicar was absent from the meeting.

After discussion and a count of those supporting founding families, a motion was made by Plante and passed unanimously that the founding families’ names would be used for the five meeting rooms. Determining which name to assign to which room was left to staff.
