News placed third in Alberta newspaper competition

Sylvan Lake News has again been recognized for the quality of its publication during competition among Alberta Weekly Newspapers

Sylvan Lake News has again been recognized for the quality of its publication during competition among Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) members.

The News placed third best overall in its circulation category of 6,500 to 12,499, against nine other newspapers. First place went to Rocky Mountain Outlook of the Canmore/Banff region and second was won by Olds Albertan.

Other newspapers in the category included Brooks & County Chronicle, Cochrane Times, High River Times, Innisfail Province, Strathmore Times, Vegreville Observer and Wainwright Edge.

The newspapers were judged by Mark Holmes of Northumberland (ON) Today, Percy Hebert of Smithers (BC) Interior News and Scott Rosts of Niagara (ON) This Week then the marks awarded by each judge were combined to determine winners. Each entrant submitted issues from the same two dates.

Categories judged were local features, community news, presentation, production quality, photography, advertising content, advertising design, classified advertising, front page, editorial and op-ed pages and sports.

In the detailed breakdowns, Sylvan Lake News placed third for local features, fourth for community news, third for presentation, second for classified advertising and fourth for editorial and op-ed pages.

Awards were presented at the annual AWNA convention June 8 in Edmonton.
