Students from Ecole Our Lady of the Rosary (OLR) paid a visit to the Sylvan Lake Lodge, and the Bethany Care Centre to share some Easter spirit.

“The Kindergarten classes from Ecole Our Lady of the Rosary School were asked to make Easter bonnets with their families,” OLR Kindergarten Teacher Lila Tighe said. “We have a huge variety of bonnets and it is quite fascinating to see - it all reflects their personal style. We asked for donations from Sobeys and Sandlewood Flowers and they donated flowers for the students to give out to all of the residents.”

The students began by singing many songs for the residents, all with the theme of Easter and Spring - followed by each young student handing out a flower to each resident.

“It is really nice and seems to make their day,” Tighe said. “We have been practising songs for a couple weeks, all focused on Spring and Easter and a faith aspect as well. We did some singing, handed out flowers and we will be parading throughout the hallways as well. We will go over the Bethany to do the same.”

The event is part of OLR’s efforts to create inter-generational learning relationships between the young and old people of Sylvan Lake.

“We have a huge relationship,” Tighe said. “Our school has a program called Bridging the Gap. The whole school comes over, and we do puzzles and all sorts of activities with the residents.”

Tighe was particularly happy that her class was able to attend, considering their educational days do not usually fall on the right days.

“This class only comes in on Wednesdays and Fridays, so they usually don’t get to come, so this is especially important,” she said, adding, “it is very important to help our students understand what Bethany and what the lodge are all about.”

“We want our students to respect their elders and to learn from them. We want to come in and make these people feel happy,” she said.

Tighe has noticed that the students always seem to want to return to the Lodge and Bethany.

“They always want to come back,” she said, adding, “thank you to the lodge for having us. It is nice to see the kids getting into the Easter spirit.”
