The Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake held their very first membership drive at Sugarbelle Cakery on January 18.

The drive, which provided free cupcakes to attendees, was intended to entice community minded individuals to help out the around town by joining the Rotary Club.

Rotary President Elect and Membership Chair, Dan Maclean, was pleased too see all the smiling faces - both old and new.

“This is the first time we have done a Rotary Open House,” he said. “It’s a meet and greet for people who have interest in the club or have friends in the club. They can come and visit to see what we do as a club in a social setting.”

“A lot of our members are very resourceful,” he said. “Many of them are business owners or people involved with the business industry in Sylvan Lake or elsewhere. With that knowledge and background, we’re able to raise quite a bit of money to put back into the community. When you look around you see a lot of needs within every community.”

The Rotary Club also gives back by providing volunteer hours and coordination for events like Winterfest and Canada Day.

“The rewarding part is getting together as a group and going out and doing community events and projects,” he said, adding these events usually include the contributions of not just Rotary Club members - but their extended families as well.

“An example of that fellowship is on Canada Day. When you go to the tents there you will see a lot of Rotary Members but you will also see there mothers, sons and grandfathers all helping out as well,” he said.

The Rotary Club meets every Wednesday from 12 - 1 p.m., where they discuss the many happenings in Sylvan Lake.

“It’s a time to get together. We look forward to seeing each other; we have a few laughs and we usually have a guest speaker,” Mclean said.

If you’re interested in joining the club and were unable to attend the open house - you can simply attend one of these meetings, or you can contact one of the Rotary Members.

“There are a lot of identifiable members in the community. We also have the Rotary International Website where when you click on Sylvan Lake you will find a list of all the members and their emails,” Mclean said.
