Tim Hortons is kicking off Spring with its annual Smile Cookie campaign in partnership with the Sylvan Lake and Area Urgent Care Committee (UCC) from May 1 to 7.

For the past 11 years, Tim Hortons has been partnering with the UCC due to its service in the community.

“They are the charity of choice in our community because they’re the lifeline for so many community members who we serve day in and day out. We believe that its essential to give back to organizations that keep our community healthy and safe,” said Owner/Operator of the Sylvan Lake Tim Hortons John Paul Doucette.

Each year more money has been raised for the UCC.

“In our first year in 2012, we partnered with the UCC and raised $4,000, last year, we are proud to share that we raised $21,521.93. This amount makes us one of the top fundraising groups in Alberta,” Doucette said.

The money fundraised during the event is held in trust to purchase medical equipment for the Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (AACS), UCC Chair Susan Samson said.

“To date the UCC has spent approximately $830,000.00 on medical equipment including a state of the are X-ray machine for the AACS.”

Money fundraised has also been used to attract healthcare professionals to the area.

“For 2022 only, the UCC designated those funds raised to be used to attract healthcare professionals to Sylvan Lake. The UCC works closely with Alberta Health Services to showcase the community to interested doctors looking to relocate to Sylvan Lake,” Samson said.

In order to reach fundraising goals volunteers and staff spend one hour each in the drive-thru at the Time Hortons.

“Last year we had 120 people spend one hour each, for a total of 59 hours in the drive-thru at our Sylvan Lake location. We are proud to have a major volunteer commitment from the local RCMP, Fire Department, elected officials, the Lions Club and Rotary, local businesses and residents, ” Doucette said.

For staff at Tim Hortons, the annual Smile Cookie event is huge.

“Our staff, bakers and management at Tim Hortons are dedicated to helping raise as much funds as possible and to support our week-long initiative by providing logistical support, direct sales, cash donation management, marketing, pre-cookie sales and of course baking all those cookies, fresh, every day,” Doucette said.

The UCC is fortunate to have this relationship with the entire team at the Tim Hortons in Sylvan Lake, Samson said.

“It is absolutely necessary to be able to provide timely medical treatments. The UCC feel that the right healthcare service should be available for everyone at the right time and place. Tim Hortons shares this commitment to healthcare as well as every volunteer who joins this event and every customer who purchases a Smile Cookie.”
