Youth employment centre now open

The summer youth employment office operated by Sylvan Lake Youth Services opened for the season last Tuesday

The summer youth employment office operated by Sylvan Lake Youth Services opened for the season last Tuesday on the main floor of the community centre.

It’s open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday until Aug. 23.

“We believe that youth are a valuable asset to the Sylvan Lake business community and we want to ensure that any employment opportunity is made available to them,” said youth services coordinator Krista Carlson.

The youth employment office will have a job board that youth can browse for available positions. As well they can access assistance in résumé writing, job searching and interviewing skills. Full-time, part-time and casual jobs will be available and can include anything from reception or customer service to lawn maintenance or janitorial duties.

This is a free service for employers and youth with a mandate to connect youth with available opportunities, however it is up to employers to thoroughly screen candidates, said Carlson.

In order to assist youth in their path to success, office staff have organized job creation projects where youth who have little to no job experience can participate in events and activities that will give them the opportunity to gain skills and earn some income over the summer, she added.
