April 18, 1959 - August 29, 2022
It is with great sadness that the family of Douglas Henry Wahl announce his passing on Monday August 29, 2022 at the young age of 63. He was born in Edmonton, raised in Red Deer but spent all of his adult life in Sylvan Lake.
Dougie was an avid hunter and fisherman and a loyal partner and friend. He was an astute businessman successfully starting and running two oilfield companies, and enjoyed sharing his time with his family, extended family and friends. He was humble, but we all knew him for the kind-hearted soul he could be, helping people who were less fortunate.
He was a charmer to the old and young and his nephews call him "a legend". He shared hunting and fishing trips with them (and many others) and taught them from an early age how to "shake hands like a man". He was always full of stories of his adventures; his presence would light up a room and he drew people to him like a magnet.
The "Big Bear" as he was affectionately known, will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered in our hearts. He is survived by his partner, Lori Mercredi and her family, his parents, Doug Sr and Joan Wahl nee Vellner; his three sisters and their spouses: Christine Murphy and Murray Goodwin, Karen and Cam Scheelar, Cathy Wahl and Wade Donkersley. He had nieces and nephews who thought the world of him: Jared Scheelar and Joel Scheelar, Jeff(Diana) Murphy and Stuart (Sydney) Murphy, Paula (Brandon) Lohse, Randi Scheelar, Chelsea (Max) Killian and Samantha Fraser.
Dougie is gone way too soon, and we would have loved more time with him, to hug him and to see his beautiful, contagious smile, which was all too rare over this last year.
Memorial donations may be made to a mental health organization or wildlife rehabilitation of your choice, as he was an animal lover and had many dogs, cats and horses who are all eagerly waiting for him across the rainbow bridge.
The service will be held on Saturday September 10, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Sylvan Lake Community Centre, followed by a celebration of his life at the Sylvan Lake Legion from 12-3 pm.
