February 24, 1939 - April 8, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our loving and caring mother, grandmother, great grandmother and cherished friend, Mrs. Greta Anna Classen (nee Fries) who passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre, Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 at the age of 86 years. Greta was born on February 24, 1939 in Neubrunn, Germany to Alois and Rosa Fries. Greta married Manfred "Fred" Classen in 1961 and moved from Neubrunn, Germany to McRae, Alberta, where they farmed and raised their four children. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning, baking, as she loved her desserts, and worked hard for her family. She loved her family, friends, and had the best smile, a great sense of humor and laugh. She had the biggest heart, and she always welcomed anyone in for a home cooked meal. The door was always open. Greta and Fred moved to Red Deer in 1980 and became owners of Honky Tonk Grill and Saloon. She loved people watching, it was a lot of work, lots of fun and great memories. They returned to farming in Rimbey and retired to Sylvan Lake in 2001. She loved road trips and enjoyed her many adventures and travels afar over the years. Greta will be lovingly remembered by her three daughters, Brigitte (Randy), Lisa (Steve), and Linda, her son, Lawrence (Bonnie), her three grandchildren, Brittany, Kathleen (Mitch) and Michelle, and her four great grandchildren. She will also be deeply missed by her brother, Gregor in Germany and many extended family and friends, and others whose lives she touched along the way. Greta was predeceased by her husband, Fred, her parents, Alois and Rosa, her sister-in-law, Maria, and her brother-in-law, Paul. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Bethany Sylvan Lake for their care and compassion. A Celebration of Greta's Life will take place at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 212, 4916 - 50 Avenue, Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Saturday, May 10, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, in lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations in Greta's honor may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at www.alzheimer.ca.
