Mary Martha Nagy (nee Balog) passed away at the Lacombe Hospital on Sunday, March 27 at the age of 97 years. Mary is survived by her grandchildren Daren (Rochelle), Nikki (Chris) and Natalie (Travis), great-grandchildren Brooklynn, Clayton, Bennett and Madelynn and son-in-law Paul Ree. She is predeceased by her husband, Domokos Nagy and daughters, Julie Ree and Helen Nagy.
Mary was born in Hungary and emigrated to Canada with her family at a young age. Her family moved around a fair bit in Central Alberta in order to find work and finally settled on a farm for a few years in the Rainy Creek area. It was during this time Mary met her husband, Domy, and they were married in 1941. Mary and Domy then settled on a mixed farm that she would eventually call home until her final days. They had two daughters, Helen, and Julia, and she always supported Helen's creativity and Julie's love of animals. Tragedy struck the family when Helen passed away suddenly at the age of 17. It took her strong faith and community connection for Mary to brave this sad time. She was a cherished neighbour, friend and community member and it was these supportive relationships that were a major reason she was able to stay on the farm for 81 years.
Family was very important to Mary. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and never missed attending kids sports or school events and relished in stories and videos of weekend horse events that her family attended. She enjoyed many activities and groups such as curling, C.W.L. and the Birthday Club. She was passionate about gardening and took pride in her farm and especially her numerous beautiful flower beds and meticulous yard. Mary's caring and charitable nature was felt by all who knew her, and even those she only met a few times, she would always refer to as 'friends'.
The family would like to take this opportunity to extend sincere thanks to friends and family throughout the years for their goodwill to Mary, and especially Marlyne for her caring, dedicated, and adventurous companionship to enable Mary to live out her dream at home.
A funeral mass for Mary will be held at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, Sylvan Lake, Alberta on Friday, April 8 at 1:00pm. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to the Lacombe Foundation ℅ Bentley Care Center or the charity of the donor's choice.
