May 30, 1935 - July 4, 2024

In loving memory ~

Elmo Miles Haugan passed from this life peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital on July 4, 2024, at the age of 89 years old. Miles was born in George and Myrtle's farmhouse in Kelvington, Saskatchewan on May 30, 1935.

Shortly after his birth Miles and his family moved to the homestead near Fosston, Saskatchewan where he grew up with his older sister and eventually 12 younger siblings, making a total of 14. Miles attended High School at Two Rivers Bible Institute (eventually Nipawin Bible Institute). After High School Miles worked on a farm owned by Calvin Baker near Kindersley. It was while attending the Kindersley Alliance Church that Miles met the love of his life, Evelyn Frank. Miles and Evelyn were married in the fall of 1955. They welcomed their first child Randy a year later, followed by Kevin in 1959, Stanley in 1960, Joell in 1964, James in 1969 and Maria in 1973.

Miles and Evelyn made 27 different houses into homes over the years, living in Kindersley, Regina, Calgary, Dawson Creek, Grande Prairie, Fort St. John, Langley, Abbotsford, Kamloops, Eagle Bay and finally, Sylvan Lake where they settled in their house at 18 Garden Court for a record-breaking 20 years.

Miles was a gas fitter and tin smith by trade, and he worked for the Government of B.C. as a Gas Inspector from 1975 until he retired in 2000. He continued to work in his woodshop making furniture until he moved to the Sylvan Lake Lodge in 2023.

It is hard to sum up a person's life, but you can make a good case that Miles lived his life sitting at a coffee shop, drinking a small black coffee, and having conversations. Over the decades he had conversations with old friends and strangers. In those few moments, he found out where they were originally from, what they did for a living, who possible mutual acquaintances were, and perhaps most importantly, if and how they knew Jesus. Miles loved God and he loved people, and he had the gift of telling them all about Jesus.

Miles is predeceased by his parents, his sisters Delilah, Lenore and Marie, and his two sons Jamie and Stanley. He leaves to mourn his sweetheart Evelyn, his wife of 68 years; his sons Randy (Connie) of Fort St. John, Kevin (Wendy) of Sylvan Lake, Joell (Michelle) of Swift Current; his daughter Maria (David) McMann of Sylvan Lake and his Daughter-in-law Louanne of Calgary; brothers Gerald, Larry, Clarence, Leroy, Marlin and Lionel; sisters Franny, Diane, Adele and Joanne; 15 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

A funeral service for Miles will be held at the Alliance Community Church in Sylvan Lake at 2:00 PM on Friday, August 9, 2024. A luncheon will follow.
