It seems the town council is starting to seriously consider the idea that a beach can be built by dumping a bunch of sand on the grass above the seawall. I hope they will think it over and reason will prevail.
A few truckloads of dry sand will not miraculously turn into a beach. All it will be is a giant sand box. A beach requires both sand AND water. A beach is somewhere a child can dig a hole and watch the water fill it up. It’s a place where you can dig canals and moats, and where the sand is damp enough to build sandcastles. You can walk on a beach and feel the little waves tickle your toes.
Please don’t ruin the beautiful grassy areas we have. People come from all over the province to spread their towels and blankets on the cool, clean grass, to sunbathe and picnic near the water, without getting sand into everything they own. It’s one of the major attractions of Sylvan Lake.
Of course we all would like to have a sandy beach again. But if we can’t figure out a way to make one where it belongs (below the seawall), perhaps we should just be patient and wait for nature to take its course.
