This year, I decided to kick off the new year by trying something I had never done before.
So I, along with my best friend, went to Next of Kiln in Sylvan Lake to do some pottery painting on Jan. 4.
For those who don't know, pottery painting is decorating ceramic objects including mugs, cups, piggy banks, and more with paint.
Before going to actually paint something at Next of Kiln, I have been in the business before just to browse, or to cover events including the Sylvan Lake Theatre Trail which used the location for one of their plays.
When my friend and I arrived, there were tons of different ceramic objects to choose from to paint. Luckily I already had an idea that I would make something for my Mom.
My Mom is obsessed with piggy banks and has a pretty big collection, so that narrowed down my search quite a bit. After all, for my Mom's collection she has just one criterion, the piggy bank must be a pig.
That left three options and I chose one that I felt was perfect.
My friend had a bit more difficulty picking what ceramic she wanted to paint. With so many options she was torn until finally deciding on painting a ceramic of three owls.
With our ceramics chosen the next thing we needed to do was pick what paint colours we wanted to use to paint them.
Just like with the ceramics, there were so many colour options that it was a little hard to pick but again I narrowed down my options by thinking about which colours my Mom would prefer. Since, after all, I was painting the ceramic piggy bank for her.
My friend also decided on her colours quite quickly and with that done we went back to our table to paint.
As it was our first time there, and our first time doing pottery painting, before we started to paint a staff member came to the table to give us instructions on what to do in order to get the best results.
With the instructions given to us, we then started to paint.
For my piece, I had only three colours I was using to paint with so, in what felt like no time, I was getting the paint on the piggy bank.
As the saying goes 'time flies when you are having fun,' which my best friend and I were.
Upon finishing painting we went to the till to pay for our painted ceramics which were then taken to go in the kiln.
The new year is honestly the perfect time to set your mind to try something new, and I am super glad I decided to try out something new with my best friend at Next of Kiln.
