PIGSKIN PICKS - The Bucs’ defense held strong against the Calgary Gators.

The Central Alberta Buccaneers football team is looking to expand in 2017.

To scout players, volunteers and sponsors - the Bucs are having a general information meeting at Red Deer College.

“It is also a general information session for anyone looking to be involved with the Buccaneers. Whether that is being involved as a player, a sponsor or as a volunteer at one of our community events - that is the place to start,” said team Social Media Organizer and Lineman Vince Roth.

The meeting will begin at at 7 p.m. on March 24th in Room 2301 at Red Deer College.

While the team may play out of Lacombe, the goal of the Bucs’ organization is to represent all of Central Alberta.

“We play out of Lacombe but our community events spread pretty much anywhere,” Roth said. “For example, last week we did the Bowl for Kids for the Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Ponoka, so if we hear the call for community need in whatever community in Central Alberta needs us, we are certainly happy to step up for that.”

The team is hoping to drum up some interest from football players in the Sylvan Lake and Eckville areas.

“Our players come from all over Central Alberta,” Roth said. “The best facility to play football is in Lacombe right now but that doesn’t mean that we are just Lacombe’s team or Red Deer’s team. The Bucs are your best option for football in Central Alberta. We are a competitive club and we are a brotherhood. If you are looking for a good bond like that, the Bucs are the place to be.”

The Bucs will be also hosting their annual Pub Night at Bo’s Bar and Grill in Red Deer on March 31st at 7 p.m.

“We do it every year and it is a big fundraiser for us. We are having a silent auction and a $20 ticket gets you in there and gets you into the appetizer buffet and your first beer,” said Roth. “We will have some door prizes and raffles as well.”

The event is intended to be a feel good evening for the Bucs and their supporters

“It is a fun night,” Roth said. “Tickets are available at To the Lost, as well as Wolverine Guns and Tackle or you can get in touch with any member of the Buccaneers football team.”

Roth emphasized that any help is welcome for anyone wanting to get involved with the football club.

“If you want to get involved as a volunteer and help us out, whether it be at our merch table at games, working the gate selling tickets or working our community events coming up in the spring - we are always happy to have more bodies come out and help us,” he said.
