Ice Marathon brought in thousands for charity

An extremely busy and successful week for central Alberta speed skaters came to an end when the Sylvan Lake Ice Marathon concluded on Sunday.

Competitive and recreational races took place throughout the weekend, and followed the 24-hour speed skating marathon relay in Sylvan Lake on Feb. 17 and 18.

“It was a great week skating,” said organizer Art Goelema.

Events throughout the week raised $13,200 for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.

The winners were as follows: 100 km race - (F) Danielle Lissenberg-Bekkering, 03:32:27; (M) Berend Ridder, 03:32:28. 50 km race - (F) Danielle Lissenberg-Bekkering, 1:37:49; (M) Rinze Schuurmans, 1:37:50. 25 km race - (F) Danielle Lissenberg-Bekkering, 00:49:14; (M) Rick Dijkstra 00:49:15. 25 km youth race - (F) Lydia Koeman, 01:36:30; (M) Kees Koeman, 00:57:31. 10 km race - (F) Danielle Lissenberg-Bekkering, 18:55.3; (M) Rick Dijkstra, 18:55.5.
