Prairie Fire football squad defeated the Calgary Midget League perennial power house, Calgary Hilltoppers 27-5 in opening weekend action last Friday.

Lakers players Landon Rosene, Kyle Eckenswiller and Sulley Larocque all turned in outstanding performances to help the Fire win their season opener.

Touchdowns were scored by DJ Neustaeter, Landon Rosene and Ben Pasiuk. Owen Smith added a field goal, three converts and a single.

The Fire defense was outstanding shutting down the Hilltoppers offense and containing them to a field goal. Linebackers Cody Hawkes, Connor Brace and Bryce Maki shut down the run while defensive backs Owen Smith and Kyle Eckenwiller (two interceptions) limited the Toppers to a couple of receptions. Next game action for the Fire is Saturday against the Calgary Broncos at Shouldice Park in Calgary

The Fire developmental team, comprised mostly of Grade 9 students, was in action on Saturday at ME Global as we hosted the Calgary Wildcats. It was a great afternoon of football for both sides as we started with a jamboree and finished with a scrimmage which allowed the players lots of developmental time plus some valuable experience at full speed in the scrimmage.

This was the first development game ever held in the 12 year history of the Calgary Midget League and the Fire is proud to be the organization that spearheaded this event and enjoyed the opportunity to host the inaugural game.

The Fire will play two more development games in Calgary on April 12 and Lacombe on April 26.
