The Sylvan Lake Gulls continued their strong offensive play over the weekend with a pair of wins at home over the Brooks Bombers.
The Gulls won 9-3 and 9-7 over the Bombers to improve to 9-6 on the WCBL season. In 15 games this season, the Gulls have scored 110 runs, good for an average of about 7.3 runs per game.
In Sunday's 9-7 victory, the Gulls jumped ahead 1-0 in the third inning. They added three more in the fourth and four more in the fifth to take a commanding 7-2 lead. Brooks scored two runs in the sixth and seventh and one more in the eigth, but were shut down in the ninth by the Gulls pitching staff.
Gulls infielder Jaden Flores had a pair of two run home runs in the game. He finished the night with three hits, four RBI and two steals.
Junior Garcia also had a pair of home runs, a two-run home run in the fifth and a solo homer in the seventh. Brock Turner also had a two run home run in the victory. The Gulls nine runs came on 10 hits.
Josh Tucker pitched one inning for the Gulls and had one strikeout. Nick Veselinovic pitched four innings, allowing six hits, two earned runs, while striking out seven. Leeroy Taverez pitched two and two thirds innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, while walking two and striking out two.
Mickey McClaskey closed out the game, pitching one and a third innings with four strikeouts, no walks and no hits allowed.
In Saturday's 9-3 win, the Gulls had 18 hits. Turner was 3-for-6 with an RBI and Brock Tijerina was 3-for-6 with four RBI. Centerfielder Noah Konings was 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Matthew MacKenzie had a strong start on the mound for the Gulls as well, pitching five scoreless innings, striking out six and walking just one.
After a Monday off day, the Gulls visited the Saskatoon Berries on Tuesday and Wednesday. Sylvan Lake is back at home at Gulls Stadium on June 24, with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
