Mother nature may have brought the thunder over the weekend in Central Alberta, but the Sylvan Lake Gulls brought it on the diamond in Western Canadian Baseball League action.
The Gulls scored double-digit runs in a pair of victories over the weekend. Saturday, they downed the Moose Jaw Miller Express 10-7 at home, followed by an 11-1 rout of the Brooks Bombers Sunday on the road. Monday night’s scheduled contest at Gulls Field was postponed due to rain.
In Saturday’s win, Sylvan Lake was led by second baseman Marcus Manzardo, who had three hits and three RBIs in the victory. Jonah Weisner went 4-for-5 in the contest, with two RBI including an RBI double in the opening frame. Left fielder Kevan Diaz also pitched in a pair of RBI, while Easton Jones and Chase Rodriguez also pitch in RBI. The Gulls had 14 hits in the win.
Ty Boudreau battled through five innings, allowing five earned runs, while striking out eight and walking two. James Brock pitched the final four innings, allowing just one run on three hits, with four strikeouts and no walks.
The Gulls piled on 18 hits Sunday, with five different starters recording three hits ( Clearly Simpson, Weisner, Shea Bowen, Hank Dodson and Rodriguez). Dodson had a monster night with five RBI, including a two-run home run. Diaz also drove in a pair of runs.
Josh Tucker record eight strikeouts over six and two-thirds innings, allowing just two hits and two walks and no runs. Hagen Barcello, Nathan Naccarato and Brian Baker closed out the game and combined to allow just one hit and one run.
The Gulls are back on the field Wednesday and Thursday in Fort McMurray against the Giants. The Gulls return home on June 23 to take on the Brooks Bombers.
Sylvan Lake currently sits tied for first with Okotoks in the WCBL East Division with a 12-5 record.
