Sylvan Lake Gulls roll over Medicine Hat Mavericks

The Sylvan Lake Gulls put on an offensive clinic over the weekend.

Sunday, the Gulls downed the Medicine Hat Mavericks 13-9, which followed an 18-5 drubbing Saturday on the road in Medicine Hat.

Jonah Weisner led the Gulls’ offence Saturday, going four-for-five with six RBI and two runs scored. He fell just a triple short of the cycle on the night, with two singles, a double and home run. Hank Dodson also had a three-run home run, while Shea Bowen and Carson Coffield added two RBI each. The Gulls had 18 hits in the victory.

Carson Angeroth pitched five strong innings for Sylvan Lake, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out four and only walking one.

Four other gulls pitchers combined to close out the evening, with Hagen Barcello, Steven Hospital, and Tyler McWillie not allowing a run over the final three innings.

In Sunday’s back-and-forth affair, the Mavericks took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Sylvan Lake responded with three in the top half of the fourth, but Medicine Hat added regained the lead in the bottom of the inning.

The Gulls pulled away in the fifth, scoring six runs to open up a 9-5 lead. They added four more in the sixth to go ahead 14-5, but Medicine Hat added three in the sixth and one more in the ninth.

Five Gulls had a multi-hit night, including Nick Groves (2-for-6, 1 RBI), Barcello (3-for-5), Coffield (2-for-3, home run, three RBI), Chase Rodriguez (2-for-5, home run, 2 RBI), Easton Jones (2-for-4, home run, 5 RBI).

James Brock, Alex Galvin and Nathan Naccarato all pitched two and a third innings for the Gulls. Brock allowed three earned runs on two hits, Galvin allowed five earned on three hits with three strikeouts and Naccarato strike out four and allow just one hit.

Ty Boudreau pitched an inning, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts.

The Gulls hosted the Lethbridge Bulls Monday, before traveling to Brooks to take on the Bombers Tuesday. Sylvan Lake will be back at home on July 13 and 14 hosting the Swift Current 57s.
