Sylvan Lake Midget AA Mariners fighting for provincial title

The midget AA Mariners will host the provincial tournament over the August-long weekend

The Sylvan Lake Midget AA Mariners will be hosting Tier III Midget AA Provincials this weekend. The competing teams are:

  • Sylvan Lake Mariners
  • Blackfalds Pirates
  • Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox
  • Sherwood Park Athletics
  • Marwayne Huskies

The five-team tournament will consist of 10 round robin games starting at 9 am on Friday, Aug 3, morning at Diamond Five in Four Seasons Park. The final is slated for 3 pm on Sun., Aug 5, barring any tiebreaker games.

This is the second year for the midget team, and first year they have played in Tier III.

“The players have really improved this year, as individuals and as a team,” said Head Coach Dave Elwood. “Getting moved up to Tier III is a real feather in their cap,” he adding the tournament will be a challenge.

The team consists of 13 players from Sylvan Lake, Rimbey and Blackfalds.

“We have a nice mix of veteran players and young kids,” said the 2nd year coach. “Our older players are great leaders and great kids.”

Opening Ceremonies will take place at 5:45 pm on Fri., Aug. 3, with the Mariners to follow at 6 pm versus the Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox.

3 p.m. – Blackfalds Pirates vs Marwayne Huskies

6 p.m. – Sylvan Lake vs. Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox

Sat., Aug. 4

9 a.m. – Sherwood Park Athletics vs. Marwayne Huskies

12 p.m. – Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox vs. Blackfalds Pirates

3 p.m. – Sylvan Lake vs. Marwayne Huskies

6 p.m. – Blackfalds Pirates vs. Sherwood Park Athletics

Sun., Aug. 5

9 a.m. – Marwayne Huskies vs. Fort Saskatchewan Red Sox

12 p.m. – Sylvan Lake vs. Sherwood Park Athletics
