Top notch young curlers coming to Sylvan Lake

The best young curlers in the province will converge at Sylvan Lake Curling Club March 1 - 3 to match their skills

The best young curlers in the province will converge at Sylvan Lake Curling Club March 1 - 3 to match their skills in a provincial curling championship.

The Optimist Juvenile Curling Championship will be held in Sylvan Lake, and will include six boys and six girls teams from throughout the province.

“The teams have been selected through regional competitions,” said Lesley Hill, a member of the organizing committee.

Teams come from the north, south and Peace areas of the province.

During the championship, there will be four draws a day and three sheets of ice will be consistently active. A winner will be declared on Sunday.

About 100 volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks during the event and also for pre-event activities.

Hill said the event is well worth watching and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy viewing some excellent curling.

“These are top notch curlers and there is no charge,” she said.

As part of Sylvan Lake’s Centennial celebrations, the event will have the theme of embracing the future and celebrating the past.

Sylvan Lake Curling Club will also host the Alberta Scotties, coming in January, 2014.
