Sailors in the Sylvan area are preparing to host a large national competition at the end of August.
The Canadian Yachting Association (CYA) Women’s National Keelboat Championship is being held for the first time on the prairies and it’s being hosted by Sylvan Lake Sailing Club.
The community will see “one of the largest gatherings of women sailors from across Canada” from August 30 to September 2.
“The CYA Women’s Nationals opens the door for women sailors to gain the experience they need to compete in the racing world of today,” said a news release from Margaret Phelan.
The women will be competing on 24 foot high performance Martin 242s which are being supplied by the local club’s members.
The event is open to 14 teams of four sailors.
“We are excited that applications have been received from teams from British Columbia through to Ontario,” added Phelan.
“Sylvan Lake Sailing Club has been around since 1984 — not bad for inland sailors. This event will benefit from our club’s regatta history and achievements over the years, including the attendance of topnotch race management and a former Olympic Race Officer. The sailing stars will be the spotlight in Sylvan Lake this summer,” she concluded.
