Zone 4 team won Minister’s Cup at Alberta Winter Games

A number of Sylvan Lake and area athletes represented Zone 4 at the Alberta Winter Games which wrapped up in Banff Sunday

A number of Sylvan Lake and area athletes represented Zone 4 at the Alberta Winter Games which wrapped up in Banff Sunday with Calgary zone taking home the award for most medal points.

Roughly 2,200 participants from across Alberta competed in 19 different activities during the multi-sport event for young athletes aged 11-17.

Zone 4 Parkland picked up the Minister’s Cup which is awarded to the zone showing the greatest improvement from one Alberta Games to the next.

Local competitors and their placements, according to the Alberta Games website included:

Jacob Gringhuis, 13-14 speed skating relay - first; speed skating male individual - sixth;

Dallas Zimmerman, 15-16 juvenile male cross country skiing relay - third; Juvenile male classic - 14th; Juvenile male sprint - 13th.

Rylea Lunde, fencing mixed team event - fifth; women’s sabre - sixth.

Cory Wilson, fencing mixed team event - fifth; men’s sabre - eighth.

Jordyn Burgar, female hockey - sixth.

Therese Johnson, Jasmine Photinopoulos and Teaghan Wilson, female dual slalom team event, alpine skiing - sixth.

Therese Johnson, U14 female alpine skiing, giant slalom - 32nd; female slalom - 32nd.

Jasmine Photinopoulous - U14 alpine skiing, giant slalom - 16th; female slalom  18th.

Teaghan Wilson - U14 female slalom - 33rd; didn’t finish giant slalom.

Taye Neish - freestyle skiing, youth male moguls - 19th; youth male slopestyle - 18th.

Cameron McBain - freestyle skiing, juvenile male moguls - 10th; juvenile male slopestyle - 16th.

Morgan Lockyer (Jarvis Bay), 15U female volleyball team - fourth.
