He won league’s Most Outstanding Pitcher

Zeke Thurston of Big Valley, Alta., won a world championship in saddle bronc for the third time in his career at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas.

The HJ Cody Lakers played the Strathmore Spartans at Great Chief Park in Red Deer on Saturday, Nov. 19, but a 48-31 loss means the Lakers are now done for the season, earning themselves a third-place finish in tier 3.

Despite having to travel from Alberta to Florida and adjust his practice schedule around hurricane Nicole, Sylvan Lake’s Brady Durkin, 14, took it all in stride and brought home a sixth-place finish from the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour National Championships.

The Urban Dirtworks Bull Riders Canada Finals, presented by Wrangler, took over the NexSource Centre this past weekend, Nov. 18 and 19. Thursday night, Nov. 17, saw the facility rocking with a concert by Aaron Goodvin and Hailey Benedict to kick off the adrenalin-filled bull riding events.

Despite best efforts by everyone involved, Sylvan Lake’s Lakers, Lions and Bears football teams all suffered losses over the weekend.

Sylvan Lake hockey player Talon Brigley, 17, recently started his second year playing for the Red Deer Rebels, part of the eastern conference of the Western Hockey League. Brigley was drafted to the Rebels in the second round last year.

It was a cold, cloudy and snowy day for football, but Sylvan Lake’s bantam team, the Lions, and peewee team, the Bears, left it all on the field on Saturday, Oct. 22, and both teams brought home wins.
